Style chronicles: Modern Simplicity

I love design. I always have. I’m passionate about transforming a space with purposeful, strategic furniture pieces. I enjoy collecting and displaying objects around my home that tell my design story. I appreciate the look that comes with mixing materials and using a strong accent color.

Over the years, I’ve come to define my style as Modern Simplicity. It’s a distilled, sophisticated look without much clutter. I believe a token Midcentury Modern piece is a must, and natural light is the best kind.

To me, Modern Simplicity is just that: modern and simple. It’s modern design that showcases how less can be more. We asked a few of our favorite bloggers to weigh in with their take on Modern Simplicity. Here’s what they said.

Think minimal
Choose functional, ageless pieces for a modern design look. MomSpark blogger Amy recommends using timeless pieces. Even as your style evolves or your taste becomes more refined, classic, minimal pieces still will fit into your design.

Use art as an accessory
Art can serve as a bold, modern statement. Chris of Celebrations at Home recommends art and small, purposeful accessories as a way to bring color into a room. I agree. A bold piece of art can set up a room’s entire color scheme. For Chris, this means a custom watercolor of her home and some retro patterned throws. For me, it’s a print of a buffalo hanging over my living room sofa. Whatever it is, use it to make a statement.

Stick to an accent color or two
Neutrals are at the core of Modern Simplicity. You need just one or two accent colors to pull this style together. Jessica of Live the Fancy Life shares photos of her son’s room, which showcases a neutral color palette with small pops of color.

The subtle bits of green and blue look great against gray walls and white furniture. It’s a timeless look, which will continue to be age-appropriate as Jessica’s son grows up. I have to say, Modern Simplicity can be tough to pull off with kids running around the home, but Jessica manages to pull it off.

Be sensible
Affordable style is within reach for those who love the Modern Simplicity look. Carrie from Dream Green DIY recommends starting with shopping around your home. Try swapping pillows from the living room to the bedroom for a new look that doesn’t cost a thing.

Another free way to incorporate Modern Simplicity style into your home is to leave windows bare or use minimal panel curtains to let natural light flood your home. The more natural light, the better.

Cut the clutter
Don’t fill your space with things that don’t serve a purpose. Blogger Brooke of Brooklyn Berry Designs recommends having a place for everything to avoid clutter all over your home.

As Jessica of Live the Fancy Life says, if there’s not a lot of stuff around to make a mess, cleaning up doesn’t take long. As a dad of two young kids, this is one of my favorite aspects of Modern Simplicity.
