Embrace the look of a rustic retreat

Create an everyday rustic retreat

My home is surrounded by a forest of oak trees. Fifteen acres of trees, to be exact. Deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, eagles — you name it, we’ve seen it in our backyard. (Including a bobcat!)

I appreciate décor that brings in the goodness of the outdoors. When we built our home, we put in huge picture windows to let nature in. We appreciate the cozy relaxation of nature, which means enjoying the warm glow of the fireplace, my cat curled up next to me on a worn leather armchair and a warm beverage on a side table.

While this may be my everyday oasis (and I don’t mean to brag, or do I?), for many, this rustic retreat is a perfect vacation destination. If you’re seeking a bit of woodsy comfort this summer but won’t make it out of the city, these tips will help you create an atmosphere of a rustic retreat. Just add the s’mores!

  • Focus on patterns and textures for fabric. Can’t you just picture it — snuggling up in a sleeping bag in a tent or laying on a cozy blanket under the stars. Bring this feeling into your home with the right kinds of fabrics. When you’re picking out pillows, linen or canvas are a great texture for a rustic retreat. Worn-in leather also can add to the casual comfort of the space. Look for patterns with Scandinavian or Western inspirations for earthy tones, and don’t be afraid to add a little faux fur every now and then.

  • Choose rough, rugged and worn woods. A handcrafted appearance is key for your rustic retreat. If you love the look of natural wood but need something budget-friendly, look for furniture with rounded-log fronts and the feel of natural wood grain.

  • Create cozy warmth with lighting and throws. Give the impression of a relaxing evening sitting around a campfire with soft lighting or an arrangement of candles on a coffee table.  Keep soft, fluffy blankets nearby for extra coziness.

  • Use natural elements like birch logs and branches. Bring the outdoors in to infuse a rustic retreat feel throughout your home. Don’t be afraid to think a little creatively. For example, antique canoe paddles will look great above the mantel, and birch logs can create the perfect side table. Have you ever seen anything like this white willow chandelier? Now that’s country chic!

  • Don’t be afraid to DIY. Anyone who has spent a weekend in the woods knows the value of a little elbow grease. (Chopping wood ain’t easy, my friends!) When creating a cabin oasis, a little hands-on craftiness can go a long way. (Antler candle holder, anyone?) For those who prefer a bit of glam in their rustic space, use metallic spray-paint on natural objects, such as pinecones or leaves, for a shabby-chic feel.

As you can see, it doesn’t take much to show off your rugged spirit and feel like you’re relaxing in the north woods. For even more décor inspiration, check out the Vintage Eclectic Style Lab or visit our “So Your Style is Rustic?” Pinterest board.
