Master Bedroom Makeover: Boring Bedroom Turned Rustic Retreat
When it comes to prioritizing home décor, many people start with spaces their friends and family will see, like the dining room or living room. Down at the bottom of this list is the bedroom, which ends up gathering all the furniture and décor that no longer make the cut for your other rooms.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m done with a long day at work, I’m counting down the minutes until I can curl up in my cozy bed! Time to put some love into this recharging space, don’t you think? Especially considering our stressful lives, the bedroom should be a place to relax and recuperate. We think a modern farmhouse bedroom fits the bill perfectly!
There’s no better example of a relaxing bedroom than Liz Fourez’s stunning master bedroom makeover. Without further ado, here’s the after shot:
This master bedroom makeover sure takes your breath away – and you haven’t even seen the before! I was so enamored by Liz’s stunning makeover, I caught up with her for a few important questions.
May: Your bedroom had quite the transformation! What problem existed in the room, and how did you solve it with your makeover?
Liz: When we first moved into this house, our bedroom became the catch-all for everything that didn't find a home. Nothing matched, we had no storage and it didn't feel like a relaxing space at all. In fact, for three years we slept on a mattress on the floor because our old bed and box spring wouldn't fit up the staircase!
When I started planning our master bedroom makeover, I knew we needed to get our bed up off the floor, add storage, give the room some style and create a small workspace to function as my husband's home office. We added a desk, storage console and nightstands in a beautiful natural finish that paired really well with neutral white planked walls and a gorgeous iron frame bed.
May: What was the step-by-step process you followed for completing this master bedroom makeover? How did you make your plan of attack?
Liz: First, we focused on the walls. Our bedroom is an attic space, so many of the walls are slanted, short and awkward. We added wide, white planks to each wall, making the room feel much more cohesive and calm. To add to our home's farmhouse appeal, we added a vintage-inspired iron frame bed with cozy white bedding.
Then, we framed the bed area by installing a faux wood beam above the bed with delicate lace curtains off to either side. To complete the look, we added several pieces of Sauder furniture to add storage and functionality to the room.
May: So, what’s next? Finally enjoying this beautiful space, I hope!
Liz: We still have a few final touches to finish, such as lighting, but already this this master bedroom makeover has come a long way! I no longer see clutter and chaos when I walk into our bedroom. I see a beautiful, light-filled, cozy, relaxing space that I feel so lucky to wake up to every morning. It has the perfect amount of farmhouse charm that matches the rest of our home, and I couldn't be happier with the result!
